Signal Mountain Scramble - Monday, May 5th 2008
On Monday, May 5, the fifth annual Signal Mountain Golf Scramble
was held at the Signal Mountain Golf & Country Club. The event this
year was for the benefit of the Founders’ Fund to help provide
financial support to programs, curriculum and facilities for the new
Signal Mountain Middle / High School beyond those traditionally
provided by the county educational system.
More than seventy-five companies and individual sponsors,
two-hundred golfers, and dozens of volunteers participated in
raising $60,000 in revenue for the event. Scramble Chairman, Bob
Linehart said, “The generosity of this community never ceases to
amaze me. Our volunteers were enthusiastic and so many people came
through for us. We had very little out-of-pocket expenses;
everything from the meals and drinks to the contest prizes and the
golf course was donated.” The net revenue for the one-day event was
$54,140.
The Scramble Committee consisted of Samantha Stiles, Julie Romeo,
Lauren Palmer, Shonda Nix, Scottie Drennan, Stephanie Cate, Kirk
Burns, Pam Morrison, Nicole Roberts, and Steve Spinello.
The weather was perfect and all the golfers had a great time. Greg
Cullum of First Tennessee Bank said, “This is a great tournament, we
are happy to be able to assist the High School and the community
through this event.” Llew Boyd with US Insurance Services added, “We
really had a good time and they do a fine job organizing it, it’s a
privilege to be able to support the community and I look forward to
playing again next year.” Larry Brock with Chambliss, Bahner, &
Stophel said, “We support the community in a number of different
ways, but we think supporting excellence in education and the
children of our community is critical.”
The team consisting of Doug and Chuck Connor, Moe Galbraith, and
Mike Borders took first place. The Girl Power team of Lizetta
Paturalski, Karlette Baker, Treena Smith, and Paula Register
finished a close second. Linehart added, “There are a lot of
tournaments geared toward great golfers, but we tried to have
several contests for duffers as well. We even had a shortest drive
award, but I’ll save the dignity of the winner and won’t mention his
name.” Dave Lambeck proved expert golfers still ruled the day by
hitting a rare double eagle on number nine.
The major sponsors of the Signal Mountain Golf Scramble included
Robyn & Eric Judd of Realty U, the many Signal Mountain residents
employed with Republic Parking System, Dr. Keith Dressler, Llew Boyd
of U.S. Insurance Services and U.S. Insurance Group, Buddy Hulgan
and Signal Mountain Construction, and Larry Brock of Chambliss
Bahner & Stophel, P.C.
Golfers were treated to meals by Pruetts, Southern Star, Petunia’s
Silver Jalapeņo, and other area restaurants. Fun was the order of
the day, but golfers and sponsors were aware of their main cause.
Tom Poteet of the Signal Mountain Athletic Club said, “I think this
is the one time I golf each year. We just come out here with
friends, have fun, and celebrate a great cause.” Perhaps Robyn Judd
of Riverside Property Management and Innovative Real Estate summed
up the tournament best when she said, “I can’t think of a more
important charity than education. This High School is going to be
great for our community and we are just happy to be part of it.”
The major sponsors of the May Celebration weekend included; Signal
Mountain Community News and the Times Free Press , Pruett's Signal
Mountain Market, Alexian Village and Sparta Homes/Dogwood Grove.
